In God Alone, We Grow In Love: A Vision For Our Youth

Across the parishes and schools of the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux, a consistent message has emerged during our Bishop’s pastoral visits: our people long for stronger youth formation and vibrant diocesan-wide youth ministry. Parents, pastors, teachers, and young people themselves have expressed a heartfelt desire for opportunities to gather beyond parish boundaries—for retreats, conferences, service experiences, and moments of encounter with Jesus Christ.

Moved by these conversations and guided by prayer, Bishop Simon Peter has articulated a clear and hopeful vision for the future. At the heart of that vision is a renewed investment in our young people. This year, 50% of the Bishop’s Appeal is dedicated directly to youth—25% to the Office of Catholic Schools and 25% to youth ministry. This significant commitment reflects a profound truth: the future of our Church is present in our youth today.

The theme of this year’s appeal, “In God Alone, We Grow in Love,” flows from the Bishop’s episcopal motto, In Deo Tantum—“In God Alone.” These words remind us that authentic growth—whether in faith, hope, or love—begins not with programs or strategies, but with Christ Himself. If our young people are to flourish, they must be rooted in Him. As our Bishop often reflects, when hearts are anchored in God alone, love becomes fruitful, communities become vibrant, and discipleship becomes joyful.

Throughout his travels across the diocese, the Bishop has listened attentively. He has heard of the challenges facing families and parishes. He has also witnessed the extraordinary generosity and faith of our people. What he envisions now is a diocesan youth ministry that strengthens parish efforts by offering larger gatherings, retreats, leadership formation, and mission opportunities—experiences where young people can encounter Christ personally and discover that they are part of something greater than themselves: one Catholic family united in faith.
This vision is not simply about organizing events; it is about stewardship. Sacred Scripture reminds us, “As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace” (1 Peter 4:10). Our young people are not only recipients of our ministry, they are gifts entrusted to us. As one diocesan community, we share responsibility for nurturing their faith, forming their consciences, and accompanying them as they discern their vocations.

By dedicating half of this year’s appeal to youth formation, we are saying clearly: our young people matter. Strengthening our Catholic schools ensures that students receive a solid foundation in faith and academic excellence. Expanding youth ministry efforts will provide meaningful opportunities for prayer, service, catechesis, and fellowship. Together, these efforts will foster unity across parishes and cultivate a new generation of disciples who love God and serve others.

The Bishop’s vision also includes investing in those who accompany our youth—training catechists, mentors, and leaders who will walk with them patiently and faithfully. A vibrant youth ministry requires not only resources but also committed adults who reflect Christ’s love. When parishes collaborate and share resources, the entire diocese becomes stronger.
